Meridian began as a small farm town called Hunter in 1891, renamed two years later for its spot on the Boise Meridian survey line. For most of the 20th century it remained a quiet agricultural community known for apple and prune orchards, until the population began to boom. From around 6,500 residents in 1980, to almost 35,000 in 2000, to over 152,000 today, Meridian is Idaho’s second-largest city and one of the fastest growing cities in the entier country.
